Why are we here?
Preference Trusts and Wills Limited are based in Sussex and visit clients in London and the South East of England. The Company is run by its Managing Director, Andy Williams, who lives in Sussex with his family. Andy is keen on Squash, Football and Cricket and has many years experience in Financial Services. Andy and the Company are members of the regulatory body of The Society of Will Writers and Estate Practitioners. Preference Trusts and Wills Limited, has been created to develop a professional and confidential service to people in a field, which has been poorly served over the years. We live in a modern European Country, with complex legislation surrounding family life, business life and taxation. Yet, many people are still unaware of the essential nature of having professionally drafted Wills, Powers of Attorney, Trusts to protect assets, Shareholder Agreements and Partnership Agreements. Ask anyone who has had to deal with the circumstances created by a lack of such provision. Sometimes it’s traumatic. Sometimes it’s distressing. More often than not, it’s very expensive. Prevention is always more intelligent. This is because it always results in the least trauma, the least stress and the least cost. It’s a proverbial ‘no-brainer’! So why don’t nearly two thirds of the population have the provision they need, in place when they need it? From the research we carried out when we set up our service, there are five main reasons for this; Apathy – many people can’t be bothered unless the subject smacks them in the face (Metaphorically speaking, of course!) ‘Everything will be okay, don’t worry about it, what’s on TV tonight?’ Procrastination – many people know its important but there is always something more urgent. (And usually far less important!) ‘I’ve been meaning to do this for years but I’m far too busy with my origami classes’ The Inconvenience of visiting someone, during office hours – many people mistakenly believe that they need to visit a Solicitor, an Accountant, or a Financial Adviser, during office hours, to get advice in this field. ‘It will cost me time and money, before I even get any advice and you know that there’s nowhere to park” or ‘I’m not wasting my valuable lunchtime’. Ignorance – most people do not understand Inheritance Tax, the Rules of Intestacy and Trusts. Most people do not even know on what basis they jointly own their home. Or what it means to them? “We’ve got that joint tenants in common thingy’ or which of their assets will and will not form part of their estate upon their death? ‘Our mortgage protection will pay off our mortgage, won’t it? (This lack of knowledge even applies to many Accountants, many Solicitors and many Financial Advisers!) Do you know? Do your advisers know? Denial/Fear – self-denial and fear of death and therefore an inability to cope with any issue surrounding it. ‘Don’t talk about it, you’ll tempt fate’ (Yet, although obviously not a causal link, it is interesting to note that statistically people with Wills live longer!) We are here to remove the obstacles. We are here to provide a service. We’ll motivate where there is apathy – It won’t be ‘okay’ – take action – get in touch! Procrastination is emotional immaturity – if you are a mature adult – get in touch today. (And invest in Sky +!) We will visit you, when convenient to you. The furthest you may have to travel is to the cabinet containing your financial information and back to the front room. We will listen to you and we will impart knowledge to you. We will put you in an informed position. We will provide a reality check. What’s the point of knowing something after the event rather than before? We will communicate in simple terms. We will remove unnecessary jargon from our conversations and explain the necessary jargon to you. Finally, we will be sensitive. We understand that your feelings, your priorities and your worries are real to you and important to you. We will help you to make the right decisions for you and your loved ones. If you have let these obstacles prevent you from getting things done, get in touch. If you have other obstacles, which we haven’t mentioned, get in touch and even if you have provision but you’re unsure about its effectiveness, get in touch. Meeting us won’t cost you a penny.
